Are you Saint Matthew's?Wisdom of the Desert Fathers
Abba Lot came one day to see Abba Joseph and said to him, “Father, I keep my little rule to the best of my ability. I observe my modest fast and my contemplative silence. I say my prayers and do my meditation. I endeavor as far as I can to drive useless thoughts out of my heart. What more can I do?” The elder rose to answer and lifted his hands to heaven. His fingers looked like lighted candles and he said, “Why not become wholly fire?” |
We continue to celebrate a century and a half of life in this place. And we continue to pray, to hope, to work, to converse, to love and to live. To believe. We gather for worship service on Sunday at 10:00 am. Sunday's celebration is in the main church. The 10:00 am Eucharist is simultaneously available on Facebook at www.facebook.com/StMatthewsWorcester. A worship bulletin and accompanying Sunday newsletter are emailed each Saturday to those who so desire. If you would like to be included, please email to [email protected] with the subject line: "Please send me the Sunday bulletin." To see what's going on at Saint Matthew's day-by-day on Facebook, search for two pages: @StMatthewsWorcester and @StMatthewPastor. Let us continue to pray constantly for one another and for all the world. And please, continue to do the simple things that can help contain the spread of Covid-19 and the coming winter flu. Only together can we find the way forward. Blessings to you and to all whom you love! |

Welcome to Saint Matthew’s.
We are a community of people who have come together from different places in the world and with very different faith experiences to worship and serve God, to learn, and to build relationships. We are deeply rooted in the South Worcester neighborhood. Our landmark building, which has stood on the corner of Cambridge and Southbridge Streets since 1893, houses a beautiful sanctuary, a contemporary chapel, a parish hall with a newly refurbished kitchen designed for community gatherings, and several school rooms.
We are Christians seeking to “see Jesus more clearly, follow him more nearly, love him more dearly…day by day” (Prayer of Saint Richard of Chichester). We value the diversity of our views of Scripture and our expressions of faith, and it is important to us that St. Matthew’s be a safe place where children, youth, and adults can grow and explore new ideas.
We welcome everyone: inquirers, life-long disciples, long-time residents, newcomers, immigrants, college students, children, youth and families, singles, and seekers.
In this hard season of pandemic we are joined in prayer wherever we are. May God grant us strength, courage, and loving commitment to one another in hope for the future.
